Hi, my name is Tony and like you I was a fundamentalist Christian who believed (very uncomfortably) that God sentenced millions of people to the unbearable agonies of hell for trillions of eons. But those beliefs never sat well with me and like so many others I became angry, confused and distracted, and I began to hate God. And then one day something happened. I was watching a show called cosmic odyssey on the science channel and they were explaining theories about the creation of the universe. And one theory jumped out at me. The theory goes that the universe which is unimaginable is size and scale and everything in it, stars, planets, star nurseries, comets, asteroids, solar systems, things that are measured in trillions and billions of trillions of miles and are still tiny compared to the size of the known universe came forth from a single atom! And I thought THAT SOUNDS LIKE GOD TO ME! And something happened that I'm a little uncomfortable talking about. I started to weep, but it was with joy not sadness, the strength went out from my knees and I began to praise God because it started me to thinking about God's character and I began to realize that a God who can create an entire universe and all that's in it from one single atom cannot be capable of casting a human being in molten rock for 10 seconds let alone for eternity! It was as if a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders and for the first time I truly came to love God and now I see the wonder in all his works and I feel close to him for the first time in my life. I think about how I am constructed from the cellular level all the way down to the sub-atomic level and how my body works and how the universe functions and I have to stop after a while because I've felt myself being pushed over the edge because my mind cannot comprehend it all. But the tiny bit I can comprehend fills me with incredible joy and brings me back to the character of God and again reinforces my belief that not only does God not burn people in hell but because of his incomprehensible greatness is incapable of doing so. I believe strongly that if anyone truly wants to be close to God they should study the universe and its workings. I don't mean getting a masters degree in astrophysics but just learning the basics from science. Even if the scientists who teach it don't believe in God that does not mean you can't learn from them and grow to appreciate God for what he truly is!
